Mileage: 7.5 miles
AM: 3.75miles PM: 3.75 miles
Running was at a minimum today. With the Half Marathon on Saturday I need to really scale back my training to allow my body to recover and prepare for the race.
My preparations are being hampered slightly by the man-flu that is lingering in my system. It is very frustrating. Having felt a lot better yesterday morning and then a little unwell in the afternoon, I was convinced that I would be normal again today. Unfortunately I woke up this morning to feel discomfort in my neck from a swollen gland. Not good. I felt heavy and very tired. I still ran to work, but the weaker parts of my body ached quite a bit and I felt quite run down by the time I was showered and sat at my desk. By lunch time though, I was starting to feel better again and after another healthy influx of fruit I was feeling a lot better mid-afternoon. Sat here in the evening, I am tired again and although I can still feel the swollen gland in my neck I do feel better than before. Hopefully another good night's sleep and some manuka honey and I will be fighting fit again tomorrow.
I find man flu very frustrating, as I have trained really hard and got myself in great shape. Until feeling unwell I would have said that I was in better shape going into this race than I was before the Edinburgh Half where I did so well. It seems very unfair that something out of my control can conspire to ruin my race.
Thankfully I still have a couple more days to get it out of my system and hope that my energy levels and overall fitness return to normal, as that is what I most worry about. I can live with a runny nose, but feeling low on energy can be soul destroying during a race, as every mile feels hard and the pace is always much slower than desired. A half marathon is a long way too. I guess I won't really know until 3 or 4 miles into the race on Saturday. Although I am frustrated I am still going to race and still give it my best. I'll just have to work hard for a good result. I have been fortunate to have some good race this year, but I don't plan to rest on them.
With that I'm off to get another manuka honey drink!!
