Mileage: 11.5 miles
AM: 3.75 miles, PM: 7.75 miles
I woke up this morning feeling a little tired, but not too bad. The man flu signs I was worried about yesterday were not too prevelent and after a cup of coffee I felt okay. My run to work was fairly quick, although my legs twinged a bit after last night's massage. All in all I was good. Gail is still quite ill with it and spent today at home in bed cuddling the dog (he's very good at sympathy, much better than I am!) and I was really worried that I too would come down with it, like she has. However, it hasn't completely gone away, as late this afternoon I certainly felt a little unwell and very tired, nowhere near a 100%, but not ill enough to cancel my training plans.
With the race on Saturday I decided that going to track was not the best idea. I try and take it easy at the track when I am close to a race, but I never succeed and always get too carried away with the reps casusing some problems for my taper. The short, fast stuff that we normally do at the track would also be of little value in preperation for my half marathon. Instead, I opted to do a couple of mile reps in the Meadows followed by a few 2 minute fast, 2 minute slow reps, all at half marathon pace. The aim being to keep my legs sharp and to help my pacing for Saturday.
Kim and Dan came along too. Dan is tapering for the Edinburgh marathon so really just needs to tick over until the 23rd, so a small speed session like this suited him. Kim is still recovering from a broken ankle and some hip problems that came about as a result of that, and is looking to build up her speed work.
My mile reps were okay 5.33 and 5.37, a little bit quick than I was aiming for, but both were quite comfortable, which bodes well. Afterwards we did 3*2minutes at pace with 2 minutes jog recovery between them. These felt very comfortable and all three were at about 5.40-45 minutes per mile pace, exactly what I am looking for on Saturday, so I was pleased with that.
